Rabies
Rabies is a deadly viral disease transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. It affects the central nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. Vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself from rabies, especially when traveling to high-risk areas.
Countries at Risk
Rabies is prevalent in many parts of the world, particularly in:
Asia (e.g., India, Thailand, Vietnam)
Africa
Central and South America
Eastern Europe
Travelers visiting these regions, particularly rural areas with limited access to medical facilities, are at greater risk of exposure.
Travel Precautions
To reduce the risk of rabies while traveling:
Get vaccinated before traveling to high-risk areas.
Avoid contact with wild or stray animals.
Seek immediate medical attention if bitten, scratched, or licked on broken skin by an animal.
Wash any wound thoroughly with soap and water.
Signs & Symptoms
Rabies symptoms can appear weeks to months after exposure and may include:
Fever and headache
Anxiety and confusion
Tingling or itching at the exposure site
Difficulty swallowing, drooling, or fear of water (hydrophobia)
Muscle spasms and paralysis
Ultimately, death if untreated
Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal, making vaccination and post-exposure treatment critical.
