What is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis refers to the swelling of the sinuses, typically caused by a viral infection. The condition leads to a buildup of mucus, resulting in discomfort and symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain, and headaches. Most cases of sinusitis clear up on their own within two to three weeks, but treatment can help relieve symptoms sooner.

Main Symptoms of Sinusitis
The symptoms of sinusitis may include:
-
Pain, swelling, and tenderness around the cheeks, eyes, or forehead
-
A blocked or runny nose
-
Green or yellow mucus from the nose
-
A reduced sense of smell
-
Headache, toothache, or bad breath
If these symptoms persist or worsen over a period of weeks, it may be time to seek treatment.

Available Treatments for Sinusitis Through the Pharmacy First Service
During your consultation at Wymeswold Pharmacy, a pharmacist will assess your symptoms and may offer the following treatments:
-
Decongestant Nasal Sprays
These sprays help to unblock your nose by reducing the swelling of the nasal passages. However, they should not be used for more than a week at a time. -
Steroid Nasal Sprays or Drops
If your symptoms are more severe or persistent, a GP may recommend steroid nasal sprays to reduce the inflammation in your sinuses. These may need to be used for a longer period to provide relief. -
Pain Relief
Over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, may be recommended to ease discomfort and manage fever.
Note: If a prescription medicine is issued, the standard NHS prescription charge applies unless you qualify for free prescriptions.
