Meningitis ACWY
Meningitis is a serious bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can lead to life-threatening complications, such as blood poisoning (septicaemia). The Meningitis ACWY vaccine protects against four strains of the bacteria: A, C, W, and Y.
Countries at Risk
Meningitis is most common in regions with seasonal outbreaks or poor access to healthcare, including:
The "Meningitis Belt" of Sub-Saharan Africa: Stretching from Senegal to Ethiopia, with peak risk during the dry season (December to June).
Saudi Arabia: Vaccination is required for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.
Other regions where meningitis outbreaks have been reported, including parts of South America and Asia.
Travelers to these areas are strongly recommended to get vaccinated.
