Countries at Risk

Hepatitis B is prevalent worldwide, but the highest rates of infection are found in:

  • Sub-Saharan Africa

  • East and Southeast Asia

  • The Pacific Islands

  • South Asia

  • Eastern Europe

Children traveling to these regions, especially for extended stays or rural visits, are at higher risk of exposure.

Travel Precautions

To reduce the risk of Hepatitis B infection in children while traveling:

  • Ensure your child is vaccinated before travel.

  • Avoid sharing personal items like toothbrushes or nail clippers.

  • Avoid contact with blood or bodily fluids.

  • Take precautions in healthcare settings, such as using sterile needles and equipment.

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms of Hepatitis B may not appear immediately and can range from mild to severe:

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Loss of appetite

  • Abdominal pain and nausea

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

  • Dark urine and pale stools

Chronic infections can develop in children, leading to long-term liver damage.

The Vaccination
  • Course: 3 doses.

  • When to Vaccinate:First dose: As soon as possible before travel.
    Second dose: 1 month after the first dose.
    Third dose: 6 months after the first dose.

  • Duration of Protection: Long-term immunity after completing the full course.

  • Side Effects: Mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or fatigue.

  • Who Should Vaccinate:All children traveling to high-risk areas.
    Children born to mothers who are Hepatitis B carriers.
