Hepatitis A (Paedia)

Hepatitis A is a viral liver infection that can spread through contaminated food and water. Children are especially vulnerable when traveling to high-risk areas. The pediatric Hepatitis A vaccine provides essential protection for children against this preventable disease.

Countries at Risk

Parts of AfricaHepatitis A is prevalent in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water. High-risk regions include:

  • Africa

  • South Asia

  • Central and South America

  • The Middle East

  • Parts of Eastern Europe

Children traveling to these regions, especially those staying in rural or less developed areas, should be vaccinated before departure.

Travel Precautions

To reduce the risk of Hepatitis A infection in children:

  • Ensure your child is vaccinated before traveling.

  • Provide bottled or boiled water and avoid ice in their drinks.

  • Offer thoroughly cooked food and avoid raw fruits and vegetables unless peeled.

  • Emphasize proper hand hygiene before eating and after bathroom use.

Signs & Symptoms

Children infected with Hepatitis A may show mild or no symptoms, but in some cases, they can experience:

  • Fatigue

  • Loss of appetite

  • Stomach pain

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

  • Dark urine and pale stools

While symptoms are often mild in children, the disease can still lead to prolonged illness or complications.

The Vaccination
  • Course: 2 doses.

  • When to Vaccinate: The first dose is recommended at least 2 weeks before travel, followed by a second dose 6-12 months later for long-term protection.

  • Duration of Protection: Up to 25 years after completing the full course.

  • Side Effects: Rare and mild, including soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or fatigue.

  • Who Should Vaccinate: Children aged 1 year and older traveling to high-risk areas.
