Dengue

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause severe flu-like symptoms and, in some cases, life-threatening complications. The disease is prevalent in tropical and subtropical climates, posing a significant health risk to travelers.

Countries at Risk

Dengue is widespread in over 100 countries, with high-risk areas including:

  • Southeast Asia (e.g., Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia)

  • South and Central America

  • The Caribbean

  • Pacific Islands

  • Parts of Africa and the Indian subcontinent

Travelers visiting these regions, especially during the rainy season when mosquito activity increases, are at heightened risk.

Travel Precautions

To protect yourself from dengue while traveling:

  • Use mosquito repellent containing DEET.

  • Wear long-sleeved clothing and trousers, especially in mosquito-active areas.

  • Sleep under mosquito nets or in air-conditioned rooms.

  • Avoid areas with standing water where mosquitoes breed.

  • Consider vaccination if traveling to endemic regions.

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms of dengue typically appear 4-10 days after a mosquito bite and may include:

  • High fever

  • Severe headache

  • Pain behind the eyes

  • Joint and muscle pain

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Rash

In severe cases, dengue can progress to Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) or Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS), which can be fatal without immediate medical attention.
