Antimalarials - Malarone

Malarone® contains atovaquone (250 mg) and proguanil hydrochloride (100 mg). It is a prescription-only prophylactic agent for prevention of malaria, especially falciparum malaria, used in regions with resistant strains.

Countries at Risk

Malaria is found in tropical regions such as:

  • Large areas of Africa and Asia

  • Central and South America

  • Dominican Republic, Haiti

  • Parts of the Middle East and some Pacific islands

Travel Precautions

To prevent malaria:

  • Take your prescribed antimalarial medication as directed, without missing doses.

  • Use insect repellent with at least 50% DEET.

  • Sleep under mosquito nets treated with insecticide.

  • Wear protective clothing to reduce the risk of bites, especially during peak mosquito activity times in the evening and early morning.

Signs & Symptoms

Look out for illness beginning 7–18 days after return, though in rare cases onset may be much later. Symptoms include:

  • High temperature, sweats, chills

  • Headaches, confusion, fatigue

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain

  • Muscle aches

  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes)

  • Respiratory symptoms.

Seek urgent medical care via GP or NHS 111 if symptoms appear after travel.

No vaccine; prevention relies on Malarone and bite avoidance measures
