Antimalarials - Malarone
Malarone® contains atovaquone (250 mg) and proguanil hydrochloride (100 mg). It is a prescription-only prophylactic agent for prevention of malaria, especially falciparum malaria, used in regions with resistant strains.
Countries at Risk
Malaria is found in tropical regions such as:
Large areas of Africa and Asia
Central and South America
Dominican Republic, Haiti
Parts of the Middle East and some Pacific islands
Travel Precautions
To prevent malaria:
Take your prescribed antimalarial medication as directed, without missing doses.
Use insect repellent with at least 50% DEET.
Sleep under mosquito nets treated with insecticide.
Wear protective clothing to reduce the risk of bites, especially during peak mosquito activity times in the evening and early morning.
Signs & Symptoms
Look out for illness beginning 7–18 days after return, though in rare cases onset may be much later. Symptoms include:
High temperature, sweats, chills
Headaches, confusion, fatigue
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain
Muscle aches
Jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes)
Respiratory symptoms.
Seek urgent medical care via GP or NHS 111 if symptoms appear after travel.
