Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a viral liver infection that spreads through contaminated food and water. While it is usually mild, it can cause prolonged illness and, in rare cases, severe complications, especially in older adults or individuals with pre-existing liver conditions.

Countries at Risk

Hepatitis A is most common in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean drinking water. High-risk regions include:

  • Africa

  • South Asia

  • The Middle East

  • Central and South America

  • Parts of Eastern Europe

Travelers to these regions, especially those staying in rural areas or with local families, are strongly advised to get vaccinated.

Travel Precautions

To reduce the risk of Hepatitis A infection while traveling:

  • Get vaccinated before your trip.

  • Drink bottled or boiled water and avoid ice in drinks.

  • Eat food that is thoroughly cooked and served hot.

  • Avoid raw fruits and vegetables unless peeled by yourself.

  • Maintain good hand hygiene, particularly after using the bathroom and before eating.

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms of Hepatitis A usually appear 2-6 weeks after infection and may include:

  • Fatigue

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Stomach pain or discomfort

  • Loss of appetite

  • Low-grade fever

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

  • Dark urine and pale stools

While the infection typically resolves within a few months, severe cases may require hospitalization.
